I got this as a promo from Cajual in ’96. At the time it was a welcome edition to the canon of releases coming of Chicago that were paying homage to the likes of Larry Heard and Derrick May. However, it seems that some, if not all, the music on this EP wasn’t actually produced by Mr. Louis. For more info, check the discogs page for this release.

Joe Louis
Back To The Beginning EP
Relief/US/12
Back to the beginning, indeed, and then setting off again into newer, uncharted territories. Louis’ excellent EP uses the haunting flavor of some of Derrick May’s finer works from 1989-1990 and weaves this into four rump shaking, cerebrum rippling slices of celestial deepness. On “Flyin’ High” Louis takes us hovering over the sea just off the coast of Ibiza with a floating, technoid thing that bears more than a striking resemblance to Mr. May’s “Beyond The Dance.” “Candle Light” and “Snoopy Dancing” on the flipside are well danceable, well deep and wonderfully melodic. This an excellent EP and well…worth buying if you are of a house or techno disposition. Chris Orr
